23:39. This was my first 5k ever and it was a lot of fun. Thanks to Brogan and all of the coaches for organizing yet another great event. And thanks to that dude who sprinted with me to the finish.

A radiologist friend of mine posted on social media, “Yet another MRI for injury sustained in CrossFit.” Then several people piled on about the danger of CrossFit. I could not leave that claim unchallenged. Here’s how I responded:

I think the quality of coaching makes a big difference. I went to a few CrossFit classes in Chicago where the instructors provided only minimal instruction and supervision. It was disturbing. At my box in Boston, the coaches are scrupulous about drilling correct form prior to every workout, and closely monitor members to ensure movements are being performed safely. That’s also why my CF box is wildly popular — I think they’re up to 500 members!

Surely there is a higher risk of injury in CrossFit than other forms of working out. I find, though, that part of the benefit of CrossFit is that it builds mental toughness. CrossFit pushes you to do things that scare you, and in doing them you learn to master your fear and develop greater self confidence. You develop a sense that existence can be mastered, and I consider that worth the modest risk.

21:00 flat. Already looking forward to whittling that time down and running it again. It was pretty cool seeing everyone out there killing it!

PR by far. 21:44 some website said that was 7min miles. I was shooting for low 7s so I’m very happy with today’s results. Thanks to Brogan for leading the charge and to everyone who helped organize.

24:4-something (i think 42). This was a lot of fun. Agree with Nick that I should drop in on the endurance classes. Headwind on the way back was something else.

This was a lot of fun. I have some work to do. My PR is 24:07 from a few years ago before I started CF and I was runninng exclusively. Maybe its time to drop in on the endurance classes.
